Ingredients
Scale
2 cups elbow macaroni
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 cup marinara sauce
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Season with salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
In a large bowl, combine the cooked macaroni, beef mixture, marinara sauce, milk, and half of the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Mix until well combined.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. In a separate bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the remaining cheese and sprinkle over the top of the casserole.
In a small bowl, beat the egg and pour it evenly over the breadcrumb topping.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the top is golden brown. Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add diced jalapeños or a teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, and use whole wheat pasta for added fiber.
