- Prepare the Beef Balls: Form 1/4 pound of ground beef blend into loose balls, about 2 inches in diameter. Freeze for 15 minutes.
- Heat the Skillet: Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Brush a thin layer of canola oil.
- Toast the Buns: Add softened butter to the hot skillet and toast the buns until golden brown, 2-3 minutes.
- Sear the Patties: Season beef balls with salt and pepper. Place in hot skillet and cook for 1 minute.
- Smash the Patties: Press down on each beef ball to create a flat patty. Don’t break the meat.
- Add Cheese and Flip: Once caramelized, flip the patties and add cheese. Cover for 30 seconds.
