Ingredients

For the Beef
  • 1 pound Beef Steak Choose flank, sirloin, or rib eye for tenderness; always slice against the grain.
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch Vital for coating the beef, it helps create a crispy texture when cooked.
For the Vegetables
  • 1 medium White Onion Adds a nice sweetness; yellow onion works too if you're in a pinch.
  • 1 medium Red Bell Pepper Provides a colorful crunch; feel free to mix with other bell pepper varieties!
  • 1 inch Ginger (sliced) Use fresh ginger for that aromatic warmth; it's a key flavor player.
  • 3 cloves Garlic (thinly sliced) Fresh garlic enhances the dish's overall flavor profile.
For the Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Soy Sauce The backbone of the marinade and sauce; low-sodium is an excellent choice for less salt.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame Oil Adds a nutty depth; you can reduce or skip it if looking for a lighter version.
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing Wine (optional) Brings authentic flavor; substitute with dry sherry if needed.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey (or sugar) Provides much-needed sweetness to balance the savory notes.
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin Sauce This adds richness and complexity; can replace with extra soy sauce if you're out.
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster Sauce optional but brings a lovely umami quality; not necessary for a vegetarian version.
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese Five Spice Don't skip this; it elevates the flavor tremendously!
  • 1/4 cup Cold Water Essential for mixing and emulsifying your sauce smoothly.
For Garnish
  • 2 stalks Green Onions Use both white and green parts as a wonderful garnish.
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Seeds (optional) Sprinkle on top for that perfect finishing touch!

  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by slicing the beef against the grain into thin strips for maximum tenderness. Next, chop the white onion and red bell pepper into bite-sized pieces, and thinly slice the ginger and garlic. Gather all marinade ingredients and sauce components.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, sesame oil, Shaoxing wine, and cold water. Toss the beef until it’s well-coated with the marinade, and allow it to rest for 15 minutes.
  3. After marinating, sprinkle cornstarch over the beef and toss it again until each piece is evenly coated. This will help create a crispy texture when you cook the beef.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, cornstarch, honey, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese five spice, sesame oil, and cold water until smooth.
  5. Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat with a splash of oil. Carefully add the coated beef in batches, sauté for about 2-3 minutes until browned and crispy. Remove the beef from the skillet.
  6. In the same skillet, toss in the sliced ginger and garlic, sautéing until fragrant. Then, add the chopped white onion and red bell pepper, cooking until soft.
  7. Pour the prepared sauce into the pan with the cooked vegetables, stirring to combine well. Add the crispy beef back into the skillet and toss everything together for 1-2 minutes.
  8. Remove the skillet from heat and transfer the Easy Mongolian Beef to a serving plate. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot over rice or noodles.
