Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1 cup Hoisin Sauce Essential for that sweet and sticky glaze; skip substitutions for the best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup Soy Sauce Adds depth and umami; use tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • 1/4 cup Honey Sweetens and caramelizes beautifully; maple syrup works for an alternative taste.
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster Sauce Brings rich umami flavors; substitute with mushroom soy sauce for a vegetarian pick.
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar Balances sweetness with acidity; apple cider vinegar can be a good alternative.
  • 4 cloves Minced Garlic Infuses the marinade with aromatic goodness; garlic powder may alter the flavor slightly.
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese Five-Spice Powder Key to authenticity, providing warmth and complexity; no substitutes suggested.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame Oil Adds a nutty aroma; light olive oil can be used for a milder flavor.
For the Chicken
  • 2 pounds Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs Offers tenderness and juiciness; chicken breasts may cook quicker, adjust accordingly.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Resealable Plastic Bag
  • Saucepan

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Optional: prepare your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Whisk until well blended.
  3. Place chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, ensuring it’s fully coated. Seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  4. Remove the marinated chicken from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before cooking to reach room temperature.
  5. Arrange the marinated chicken thighs on the lined baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  6. Pour reserved marinade into a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then let it simmer for 10 minutes to thicken.
  7. Brush the thickened marinade generously over the cooked chicken.
  8. Set the oven to broil and return the glazed chicken for an additional 2-3 minutes for caramelization.
  9. Remove from the oven, let the chicken rest for a few minutes, then slice and serve.
